Monfort bat cave, samal island (davao 5 of 7)

here's another treat from Samal Island... at first i thought we will really be going inside a cave... but good thing we can just view it from a cleaner area hehe :-)

it's a private land but the owners decided to open the area to the public...

they had setup a gallery with lots of information about different species of bats...

and a guide is available to give more information and guide guests around. a few trivia here and there is good enough hehehe... we paid Php20 entrance fee.

it's not your typical cave... it's like a hole on the ground instead of the usual opening on the side of a mountain or hill...

bats that gather here belong to the specie of geoffrey's rosette fruit bats...

notice how much bat sh*t had already gathered inside the cave? they've said that bat wastes are actually expensive, it's being used as fertilizer or as an ingredient in making gunpowder....

but for the Monfort bat cave, they had stopped gathering the wastes to prevent scaring the bats. the guide told us about the instance when Extra Challenge shoot an episode there, after the shoot they have noticed a lot of baby bats fell dead on the cave floor... these babies were being held by their mothers while hanging on the walls of the caves and when they feel threatened they would panic and try to fly around dropping their babies....the Extra Challenge incident was alarming considering that bats only give birth to only one in a year... so it's a very good effort for the Monfort bat cave to help preserve the bats... :-)

they had fenced the perimeter of the caves.... there are actually 5 openings in the compound... each opening you'll get a really nice view of the bats... :-) just make sure you dont make too much noise as this affect them....

and did i mention that they these bats had already made it to the Guinness Book of Records? :-) well for being the largest colony of the geoffrey's rosette fruit bats. :-)
